Dharamshala – His Holiness the Dalai Lama congratulated Sonia Gandhi, Congress President, for her success in the recent parliamentary by-election.
In his congratulatory letter dated 16 May, His Holiness said, “By submitting yourself to the electorate in this way you have upheld and strengthened the principles of democracy”.
Sonia Gandhi earlier resigned the seat facing opposition for holding an office of profit won the recent by-election by a huge margin.
Appreciating her principled leadership His Holiness said,”India today is poised to play a major role in the world. Besides its recent great economic success and being the largest democracy in the world, India is also the home of religious tolerance, the philosophy of ahimsa and a rich civilization that goes back many centuries.Many Asian countries look up to India.
“I have long believed that India has both the moral authority and a responsibility to try to bring about peace and and happiness in our strife-torn world”.
