Dharamshala 14 May – Media can play a very important role in a democracy and it must not be partial in dissemination of information and news, said Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche at the inaugural function of the media workshop organized by the Voice of Tibet radio service, based here and funded by Norwegian Tibet Committee.

The Voice of Tibet radio service is commemorating the 10th anniversary of its inception on 14 May 1996. At the opening function attended by representatives of almost all the media houses of the Tibetan community, Prof. Samdhong Rinpoche said that news and views are two separate aspects and that they should not be mixed.

Quoting instances from the Indian freedom struggle, Rinpoche said that what the Indian freedom fighters did was patriotism to the Indian masses and the same was looked at as act of anti-establishment and terrorism by the British Raj.

The director of the Voice of Tibet Karma Yeshi gave a brief introduction of the radio service with its historical background. Karma paid tribute to VOT’s former editor Tsering Wangyal and senior reporter Kunsang Paljor who passed away in the recent years.

The three-day workshop began after the inaugural function which lasted for about an hour.

The Tibetan mediapersons will be taught ethics and codes of journalism, various kinds of media, techniques of reporting, role of media, art of interviewing etc.

The commemoration will conclude with a free concert at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts where Tsering Gyurmey, Kharag Penpa, JJI, TIPA’s Ah Ka Ma, R 59 and Peace Band will perform. Kalon Lobsang Nyandak Zayul, minister of information and international relations will be the chief guest at the gathering.
