London, March 15 – On Sunday 12th March 2006, the UK Tibetan Women’s Association organised a commemorative event in central London. A good number of their supporters, both Tibetans and non-Tibetans, attended the event.
The event began with a short introduction on the uprising of the Tibetan Women in Lhasa on 12th March 1959 by Riga Wangyal of the UK TWA. This was followed by Prayers of 21 Taras, the Prayer of Truth and the Prayer for long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
The chief guests were two former prisoners, Namdrol Lhamo and Gyaltsen Drolkar, who gave a moving talk on the suffering of the Tibetans in Chinese prisons and in particular their own 12-year experience of suffering in prison. They said, “Please remember our fellow prisoners who are still suffering and deprived of their basic human rights. Please do everything you can to help Tibetans for their freedom”. To conclude their talk, they sang a moving song, which they composed and sang in the prison in Tibet.
After thanking the guests for their talk, all sang Tibetan and British national anthems and continued informal discussion whilst enjoying a home cooked meal of Tibetan momos, khabsey and tea. Copies of the Statement of His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the 47th anniversary of the 10th March and the Statement of the President of the Central Tibetan Women’s Association in Dharamsala were distributed to all those attending the event.
