Paris Municipal Council Passes Motion on Tibet

Paris February 1-Municipal Council of Paris has passed a motion in favour of Tibet yesterday. This motion was sponsored by the Socialist political group headed by Mr Patrick Bloche. The motion received support from the Socialist party and Green party who make the majority of the 163 strong municipal councillors. The other political parties -UMP, MRC, Communist party, abstained from the voting.

The council had displayed solidarity with the Tibetan people and its peaceful struggle in the past. The Council decided to hoist Tibetan national flag at the City Hall on 10th March every year this till the Chinese authorities negotiate an agreement to grant genuine autonomy to Tibet”.

According to the Office of Tibet in Paris the motion passed by the municipal council is a landmark victory for Tibet’s friends and activists. Practical details on organizing a flag hoisting ceremony at Hotel de Ville (the City Hall) on the 10th March 2006 is being studied.

Mr Bertrand Delanoe of the Socialist Party, Lord Mayor of Paris, had received His Holiness the Dalai Lama at the City Hall in October 2003.
