GUNTUR, January 16 – Spiritual head of Tibetan Buddhists Dalai Lama on Monday called for “unity and closeness” among the religions in the world.
All religions underline love, compassion, humanity and moral values and the variety of philosophies strengthen human values, Dalai Lama told reporters at the conclusion of the 12-day Kalachakra programme at Amaravathi town in Guntur district.
“Unfortunately in the name of religion some misunderstandings are created,” he said.
The Lama who described Buddhism and Hinduism as twins, also lauded the excellent services being rendered by Christian missionaries especially in education and health care sectors.
Dalai Lama emphasised the importance of inner values and human outlook.
“Material comforts alone cannot give happiness, there are several unhappy millionaires”, he said.
The spiritual leader, who declined to discuss politics, praised the Andhra Pradesh Government for having made “superb arrangements for Kalachakra”.
About 15,000 Tibetan Buddists and 500 other Buddha followers from other countries attended the 12-day programme, organisers of the ceremony said.
Andhra Pradesh Finance Minister K Rosaiah, Tourism Minister Geetha Reddy and Revenue Minister D Dharmana Prasad Rao attended the valedictory function on Monday.
