PRESS RELEASE

PROTEST THEATRE IN DHARAMSALA AGAINST CHINESE RAILWAY

Students for a free Tibet (India) and Friends of Tibet (India) announce a joint campaign “STOP THE TRAIN!” a non-violent direct action against the ongoing railway construction in Tibet. This is in complicity with world-wide “Bombardier International Day of Action Nov 3rd”. The Government of China announced last month that they have completed the construction of Golmud-Lhasa railway track. And by next year the trains will enter Tibet bringing in hundreds of thousands of eager Chinese settlers into Tibet. This will create large scale (read more than 200 millions) human re-settlement crisis created by political maneuvering and will leave lasting human conflicts like Israel-Palestine and Tamil-Srilanka.

Bombardier Inc. is a Canadian multinational company manufacturing heavy transportation vehicles, trucks and railway carriages. This year Bombardier signed contract with the China Railways promising them to supply railway coaches for the Golmud-Lhasa railway, thus playing hand-in-glove with China in bringing the trains to Tibet.

On November 3rd, Tibetans and supporters around the world will request Bombardier Inc. to cancel their involvement. There will be actions at Bombardier offices in many cities. Bombardier offices worldwide will receive petition messages and memorandums in letters, emails, faxes, phones. All the corporate offices will be visited by protest marchers. Bombardier runs offices in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Italy, Northern Ireland, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US.

Bombardier Transportation Inc branch in India located in Baroda remains closed till 5th November due to Indian religious festival Diwali. Representatives of Regional Tibetan Youth Congress Baroda (RTYC Baroda) will submit a memorandum to the CEO of BombardierInc through Mr. Rajeev Jyoti, the regional President.

SFT (India) and FOT (India) will present a protest theatre in Dharamsala on 3rd November. The two minute protest theatre is a traveling presentation and will go places all over Dharamsala spreading awareness about the railway construction and its ill effects on Tibet and its neighbouring countries.

Besides this protest theatre, we will initiate global email campaign and also initiate mass petitioning asking Bombardier Inc. to withdraw its co-operation from the Government of China in carrying this project in Tibet.

Yours sincerely
