Dharamshala October 28 – A documentary film on Tibet called Dreaming of Tibet will be screened at the Pioneer Theatre on Tuesday, November 1. This is the first screening of the film in New York City. “Dreaming of Tibet is a film about the resilience of the human spirit. It’s an intimate portrait of three Tibetan exiles working for the survival of their culture outside of their homeland,” says Will Parrinello, the producer of the film.

The documentary has played to positive press and audience response around the world. In July this year the subjects of the film and Parrinello screened for the Congressional Human Rights Caucus. The film received the Amnesty International Film Festival Audience Award last year.

This film is a culmination of Parrinnello’s five-year bond with a group of Tibetan refugees in Nepal and the United States. “They opened their homes and hearts to me, sharing stories of their exceedingly difficult lives in exile”, remarks Parrinello.

Parrnello told phayul that he has learned a great deal about openness, communication, kindness, love, compassion and respect. “I have seen first hand that Tibetan culture is often flourishing in exile, but the same cannot be said for Tibet itself”, regrets Parrinello.

While on the surface this documentary appears to be a simple portrait, the film gets at something much deeper. It shows how the Buddhist faith has helped Tibetan’s triumph against tremendous odds and flourish as a people and a culture. The film depicts how the Tibetan refugees keep their struggle alive.

The Tibetans’ perseverance can be an inspiration because in their plight we see a people who have so much to be bitter about but who rarely, if ever, are. The film attempts to highlight how Tibetans’ lives are the embodiment of compassion. Their resolute Buddhist belief is the basis for almost everything they do. Parrinello has made many documentaries in the past and has been in the profession for 27 years.

The film will be screened on November 1, 9 pm at 155 East 3rd Street (between Avenues A & B) New York, NY 10009
