Dharamshala September 30 – In a recap of what happened two years ago the organizers of the infamous Miss Tibet pageant received a major setback yesterday when only one out of the total 8 applicants turned up to confirm her participation.
Lobsang Wangyal, the director of Miss Tibet Pageant, told this reporter that the girl will be the unopposed claimant of the crown and her name would be disclosed on October 8 when she will be crowned Miss Tibet 2005. “She will be presented with a scholarship cheque of one lakh rupees (Rs 100,000 or approximately 2300 USD)”.
“Every Tibetan girl will become a Miss Tibet if there are no contenders, she just has to wait for her turn” is a humour making rounds of the town.
The crowning ceremony has a series of entertaining programs lined up, boasts Lobsang. The pageant which was supposed to be a weeklong event had to be cut down to just a day’s program. Miss Tibet will be provided an intensive training in personality development and stage craft, and will be updated on the current affairs of Tibetan issues, says Lobsang.
All the other applicants did not confirm their participation after submission of their applications despite efforts to ascertain their status. Applications were received from Canada, India, Nepal, Switzerland, Thailand and the US. Application remains online from January to the end of June each year.
