Every year 27th September is remembered by Tibetans all over the world as the day of supreme sacrifice, valour and patriotism. A group of peaceful Tibetan demonstrators shook the foundation of the communist regime in Tibet and triggered a series of such peaceful demonstrations not only inside Tibet but also in Mainland China, stamping the immortal aspiration of the six million Tibetans of complete independence.
On September 27 1987 about 30 monks and over one hundred lay people performed three circuits of the Barkhor, carrying Tibetan National Flags and demanding independence for Tibet. Many of them were immediately arrested and tortured by hanging from their wrists and by injections. Two more demonstrations occurred on October 1st and 6th. Some 200 western tourists observed these events and many of these tourists later pooled their observations in an extremely detailed account which were then reported to various international organizations. These demonstrations led to further mass uprisings all over Tibet and China resulting in the consequent imposition of Martial Law in Tibet and the popular demonstrations of students at Tiananmen Square.
Almost three decades of genocidal communist regime in Tibet and the draconian policies to assimilate the Tibetan civilization and annihilate the unique Tibetan culture and religion resulted in the mass uprisings of 1987.
