Dharamshala, June 23 – The Department of Education of the Central Tibetan Administration is working full-throttle on the establishment of a model school here which will make full implementation of the Basic Education Policy for Tibetans in Exile.

After reviewing the state of Tibetan education in exile, the education department formulated a basic education policy, approved by the Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies last September, which it says is more appropriate to the actual needs of the exile Tibetans and may also serve as a basis for the education policy of future Tibet.

The model school is being built at the former site of the Tibetan Handicraft Centre, near lower TCV School, and will start functioning this September.

In its first year, the model school will admit 40 students, comprising students of pre-primary and class I and II of the primary classes.

The education department has already posted numerous advertisements inviting applications from both teachers and students for the model school.

Unlike other Tibetan schools, the minimum qualification for even a nursery teacher of the model school is a trained graduate teacher, a bachelor degree with one or two-year post-graduate degree in education.

The Basic Education Policy states that “As a model and for gathering experience, one or two new schools shall be opened as soon as possible, where provisions of the new education policy shall be fully implemented.”
