Protest demonstration in Amdo
Monks of Rebkong in Amdo [Ch: Qinghai] province of Tibet take part in the opening of the Great Prayer Festival or the Monlam Chenmo on February 12, 2008. On February 21, a major clash reportedly erupted between Chinese authorities and hundreds of Tibetans gathered for the Prayer festival, one of the most sacred festivals in Tibetan Buddhism. The clash further escalated into violent protest demonstrations by Tibetans that led to arrests of some 200 Tibetans. During the clash and protests, Tibetans were said to have raised slogans for the independence of Tibet and prayed for the Long Life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama. All those arrested on the first day of protest have been reportedly released by the local government apparently under the pressure of a massive Tibetan demonstration. (Phayul.com)
