China frees detained protesters

Canadians, all from British Columbia, were demanding China pull out of Tibet. Three Canadians arrested by Chinese authorities following a protest at the Great Wall against the Chinese presence in Tibet have been released.

Executive Director of Students for a Free Tibet Lhadon Tethong was arrested today by the Chinese Police in Beijing when she tried to meet International Olympic Committee officials visiting the city for the one-year countdown to the 2008 Olympics. The Tibetan independence activist has been in Beijing for the past one week risking her life to “investigate and expose Tibet-related Olympics Propaganda in lead up to One-Year Countdown”. Latest reports on her blog www.beijingwideopen.org (specifically created for the purpose), says that she has been repeatedly trying to meet IOC President Jacques Rogge since Tuesday to talk about Tibet and human rights issues. On Tuesday, six activists from the Free Tibet group were detained for hanging a huge banner on the Great Wall of China outside Beijing, which lasted for two hours.
